Dance of Liberation®

What is Dance of Liberation®

Dance of Liberation® is a somatic movement modality created by Parashakti Skye, refined over more than two decades of lived practice, teaching, and transmission.

At its core, Dance of Liberation® is a fully participatory embodiment journey; one that places the body at the center of transformation rather than treating it as an afterthought. Through structured ceremony, curated music, breath, blindfolded movement, and intentional space-holding, participants are guided into direct experience of release, insight, and remembrance.

The Dance is free from choreography, performance, any sense of needing to “get it right.” Dance of Liberation® offers a container in which the dancer is invited to move beyond habit, self-consciousness, and mental narrative; into the intelligence of sensation, rhythm, and inner knowing. The body becomes both the instrument and the guide.

Originally experienced as a live collective ceremony at retreat centers, festivals, recovery programs, and spiritual sanctuaries around the world, Dance of Liberation® has since evolved into a comprehensive modality and way of life, offering both immediate transformational experiences and long-term integration.

The practice draws from yogic traditions, modern shamanic journeying, Native American ceremonial frameworks, and somatic awareness, yet remains accessible, non-dogmatic, and inclusive. Participants are asked to engage in direct embodied inquiry.

Dance of Liberation® meets people where they are, and invites them home to themselves.

The Seven Foundations Framework

A ceremonial map of inner awareness

Dance of Liberation® unfolds through a structured framework known as the Seven Foundations®: a ceremonial arc designed to guide participants through a complete inner journey.

Rooted in ancient wisdom traditions and informed by the seven-fold Medicine Wheel, the Seven Foundations provide both structure and spaciousness. They orient the dancer toward different layers of experience: physical, emotional, intuitive, and spiritual, while allowing each person’s process to remain deeply personal.

Each Foundation represents a distinct gateway of awareness, and together they form a cohesive map for transformation.

The Seven Foundations include:

  1. Creating Sacred Space – establishing safety, intention, and presence

  2. The Journey of Intention – clarifying what is ready to transform

  3. Awakening Insight – turning inward through the use of the blindfold

  4. Breathing Life – reconnecting breath, body, and vitality

  5. Hearing the Rhythms of Your Life – cultivating sensory awareness and nourishment

  6. Dancing Your Life – embodying insight through movement and rhythm

  7. Preface to the Rest of Your Life – integration, service, and embodied continuity

In live Dance of Liberation®, these Foundations are experienced as a progressive arc, guiding dancers from preparation into deep immersion and back into integration. In longer retreat formats and ongoing practice, they become a framework for living: supporting clarity, stability, and spiritual integrity in daily life.

The Seven Foundations are more than theoretical concepts.
They are lived experiences, designed to be felt, moved, breathed, and embodied.

Together, they create a container in which somatic intelligence, interoceptive awareness, and inner insight can naturally emerge, without force, analysis, or bypassing.

Somatic Intelligence and Somatic Movement

Listening to the body as an intelligence

Somatic intelligence is the body’s innate capacity to perceive, process, and respond to life from within. It is the intelligence of sensation, impulse, rhythm, breath, and felt experience, often operating beneath conscious thought, yet guiding us with precision and immediacy.

In Dance of Liberation®, somatic intelligence is something that is remembered through movement.

Rather than asking the mind to lead, the practice invites participants to follow the body’s subtle cues: a surge of energy, a tremble, a pause, a wave of emotion, a desire to expand or soften. Movement becomes a language through which the nervous system releases stored tension, emotions are metabolized, and insight arises organically without needing a story.

Somatic movement differs from choreography or expressive dance. There is no form to perform, no shape to achieve, no external aesthetic to consider. The movement emerges from the inside out, guided by sensation rather than appearance.

Through this process, dancers often experience:

  • Increased body awareness and sensitivity to internal signals

  • Emotional release without narrative re-traumatization

  • Greater capacity for self-regulation and presence

  • Access to stored memory held in the tissues and nervous system

  • A felt sense of coherence between body, heart, and awareness

Dance of Liberation® uses movement as a means of integration, allowing what has been held, suppressed, or fragmented to reorganize naturally through the body’s own wisdom.

Dance of Liberation

Interoception

The inner sense awakened through movement

Interoception is often referred to as our eighth sense. It’s the ability to perceive and interpret signals from within the body. It is the awareness of internal states such as breath, heartbeat, temperature, pressure, emotional tone, and visceral sensation. This internal sensing system continuously maps our inner landscape, informing how safe, connected, regulated, or activated we feel.

In daily life, interoception is frequently overridden by external stimulation and cognitive activity. In Dance of Liberation®, it is intentionally brought to the foreground.

The use of the blindfold plays a central role in this process.

By temporarily removing visual input, the dancer is guided away from external reference points, mirrors, other bodies, perceived observation, and into direct relationship with their own internal experience. This sensory shift naturally heightens interoceptive awareness, allowing the dancer to feel more deeply into subtle sensations, emotions, and impulses arising from within.

Unlike seated meditation, where awareness is cultivated through stillness, Dance of Liberation® engages interoception through motion. The dancer moves with their inner sensations, allowing them to express, discharge, transform, and reorganize in real time.

This combination of blindfold + movement often:

  • Reduces self-consciousness and the sense of being watched
  • Dissolves subconscious performance patterns
  • Allows movement to arise without censorship or inhibition
  • Facilitates trance-like states of presence and flow
  • Supports deep nervous system regulation and emotional integration

When the eyes are covered, the body no longer moves for an audience—real or imagined. The dance becomes private, intimate, and honest. What emerges is authentic expression guided by inner sensation.

As somatic researcher Carrie DeJong describes interoception, it is a “real-life superpower,” supporting empathy, resilience, emotional regulation, and mental health. In Dance of Liberation®, this inner sense becomes a compass, guiding the dancer toward wholeness through direct embodied knowing.

Sacred Tools & Totems in Dance of Liberation®

Dance of Liberation® has always worked with symbolic tools that support inner journeying; objects that help orient awareness away from the external world and toward direct embodied experience.

The blindfold and Winged Ones® sacred jewelry are signature tools implemented in Dance of Liberation®.

The Blindfold

A tool for inner sight

Through sensory deprivation, the blindfold quiets visual input and softens self-consciousness, allowing the dancer to release inhibition and enter deeper states of presence. As outer reference points dissolve, other senses awaken, supporting interoception, trance states, and a more intimate relationship with inner experience.

By removing the habit of seeing and being seen, the dancer is invited into direct communion with sensation, intuition, and movement from within.

Winged Ones® as Totems & Sacred Talismans

Winged Ones® exists in quiet relationship to this work.

While Dance of Liberation® was developed long before the creation of Winged Ones®, the jewelry emerged from the same lineage: a devotion to embodiment, intentional living, and the moments of inner transformation that mark a life.

In the context of Dance of Liberation®, Winged Ones® pieces are more than accessories. They are energetic companions.

Totems chosen for how they feel.

As with many ancestral traditions, tangible objects can serve as anchors, helping the body remember what the mind may forget. When worn intentionally, a talisman becomes a bridge between the ceremonial space and everyday life.

During select retreats and certified Dance of Liberation® experiences, Winged Ones® adornments may be offered as part of the ceremonial ecosystem, supporting participants in:

  • Anchoring insights gained through the dance

  • Carrying the somatic imprint of the experience beyond the floor

  • Working with a physical object as a reminder of intention, clarity, or integration

These pieces are offered by resonance alone.

For many, a Winged Ones® talisman becomes a continuation of the journey; something the body can return to long after the music fades and the blindfold is removed.
